Anthony set a new league standard with 10 Rookie of the Week awards this season. He was named First Team All-BIG EAST and was a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team. Anthony is the first SU player to earn Rookie of the Year honors since Lawrence Moten in 1991-92. Former Orangemen Derrick Coleman (1986-87) and Dwayne "Pearl" Washington (1983-84) were also BIG EAST Rookies of the Year.
Warrick finished the regular season as Syracuse's second-highest scorer and rebounder, averaging 15.4 points and 9.1 boards per game. He ranks fifth in the league this year in rebounding average, and third in field goal percentage (.556). Warrick more than doubled his scoring output from his rookie season (6.1 ppg), an improvement of 9.3 points per game. His current rebounding average is nearly twice that of his 2001-02 average of 4.8, an increase of 4.3 boards per outing. Former SU standout Preston Shumpert was a BIG EAST Most Improved Player in 2000-01, and Etan Thomas won the award in 1997-98.
Duany, the Orangemen's senior captain, is the first recipient of the BIG EAST's Sportsmanship Award. A steady leader on Syracuse's young squad, Duany provided 11.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game this season.
Another Orangeman was honored at Tuesday's banquet. SU alumnus Louis Orr, the head coach at Seton Hall, was named Coach of the Year.
The awards were voted on by the league's coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
Syracuse (23-4, 13-3 BIG EAST), the West Division co-champions, have a first-round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament. SU will play the winner of the Georgetown/Villanova game on Thursday, March 13, at 7:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
