Four players from each team faced each other in a dual match last season. SU seniors Masha Kabanova and Shervin Saedinia played a rematch of last year’s 8-6 loss at No. 1 doubles against Missouri’s top tandem of Urska Juric and Katka Sevcikova, currently ranked 12th in Division I and first in the Midwest. On Saturday, Saedinia and Kabanova came from behind to push Juric and Sevcikova to a tie-breaker before losing 9-8 (8-6).
In singles, senior Daniela Kaluskova had a chance to avenge a 6-3, 6-2 loss at the No. 1 spot to Juric from last season. However, history repeated itself as Juric, ranked 31st in the country in the latest polls, won by the same score on Saturday. At No. 2 singles, Kabanova faced Sevcikova for the second consecutive year. In 2002, Kabanova won 0-6, 7-5, 6-4. This year, Kabanova needed three sets again to pull out the victory, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Saedinia and sophomore Kristine Bech Holte both won their singles matches a year ago, but faced different opponents in the rematch. Saedinia lost to Hana Kraftova, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3, and Holte won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5.
The Orangewomen resume BIG EAST play on Saturday, March 29, when they travel to Seton Hall for a 12:00 p.m. match. The teams will begin warmups at 11:00 a.m. SU is 3-1 in the conference this season.
