Adrian and Hernandez Take Shot Put Titles At BIG EAST Championship

Sophomore Johvonne Hernandez was named the Outstanding Female Field Performer at the 2003 BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championship and helped lead the Orangewomen to a seventh place finish with 49 points on Sunday at the Carrier Dome. The Orangemen finished 11th with 30.5 points.
Hernandez upset the shot put field, winning with a career-best throw of 52-10. On Saturday she won the weight throw and set a school record with a distance of 63-4.25. Both marks ranked among the best in the NCAA this year (13th in shot put, 11th in weight throw) and provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Championship.
Senior Tim Adrian won the men's shot put with a career-best throw of 58-4.50 and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship. Adrian also placed fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 54-8.75.
Junior Joshua Johnson took third in the triple jump with a mark of 48-5.50. Senior Matt Troha cleared 6-7 in the high jump to tie for the fourth place and classmate Richard Polidore finished eighth in the long jump (23-1.25).
Senior Alison Culley led the Orangewomen on the track with a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash (7.55) and a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (24.47). Sophomore Jenna Grimaldi finished third in the high jump, clearing a season-best 5-9.25.
Graduate student Aprelle Watkins finished sixth in the triple jump with a season-best 41-1.75. The 1,600-meter relay team of Heather Stevens, Valerie Boling, LaNae Walker and Culley finished eighth in 3:52.92.
Syracuse is scheduled to compete next at the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Boston, March 8-9.
