3/7/2003 2:55:57 PM | Men's Basketball
Syracuse has clinched a first-round bye in next week’s BIG EAST Tournament and will be the No. 1 seed in the West with a win against Rutgers. An Orangemen win would also mark the 1,600th of the program’s history, and the first undefeated home season since the opening of the Carrier Dome in 1980. The Scarlet Knights will not play in the BIG EAST Tournament as they finish seventh in the West Division. SU leads the overall series with Rutgers, 26-9, and has an 8-4 edge in BIG EAST Regular Season contests.
The Orangemen locked up their BIG EAST Tournament bye with a 92-88 win at Notre Dame on Tuesday. Freshman Billy Edelin led SU with a career-high 26 points. National Player of the Year candidate Carmelo Anthony (www.suathletics.com/carmelo) recorded his third-straight double-double and his ninth-consecutive 20-plus point game with 21 points and 10 rebounds. He needs to add seven more points to his current total of 577 to pass Lawrence Moten as SU’s single-season freshman leader.
Before Sunday’s game, Kueth Duany and Tyrone Albright will be recognized as part of Senior Day. During a pre-game ceremony, former three-time All-American Sherman Douglas will have his jersey retired.
Fans can listen to the game in the Syracuse area on the SU Radio Network, 1260 AM. Voice of the Orange Mark Johnson will handle the play-by-play duties, while Matt Park will provide color commentary. The game will also be televised on ESPN Regional in Philadelphia, Atlanta, New Orleans and Boston on New England Sports Network (NESN). Dave Pasch and Bob Valvano will host the broadcast.
