
Orangewomen Lose Doubleheader to Pirates

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse softball team lost both ends of its doubleheader with Seton Hall, 3-1 and 5-1. The Orangewomen are now 9-17 overall and 3-5 in the BIG EAST, while the first-place Pirates improved to 21-7, 7-2.
Senior pitcher Tara DiMaggio (6-8) took the loss for the Orangewomen in the opener despite allowing only three hits and striking out seven. All three runs she allowed were unearned. She also pitched two and two-thirds innings of relief in the second game, allowing one run and striking out one.
Junior second baseman Rachel Park led the offense with four hits in eight at-bats. Freshman Christina Miro (Tamiment, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) had two hits and drove in her first career run with a double. Sophomore Tanya Rose also had two hits, while senior Kristen Collins had an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
The Orangewomen held 1-0 leads in the fifth inning of both games, but the Pirates scored a combined six times in their half of the inning. Seton Hall scored twice on a bases loaded passed ball in the opener and then scored four runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap on two bases loaded walks, an error and a groundout. The Pirates also scored one run in the top of the seventh inning in each game. Syracuse stranded a total of 18 runners in the doubleheader, including 12 in scoring position.
Junior Haley Larsen (1-4) was the losing pitcher in the nightcap. She went four and one-third innings, giving up three runs on four hits. Larsen struck out four. Christina Shanko (13-2) and Megan Meyer (8-4) both earned complete-game wins for the Pirates.
Syracuse continues its extended homestand with a BIG EAST doubleheader versus St. John's on Sunday, April 13. The first game is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
