Powell Registers 200th Career Point at Massachusetts
Michael Springer, Michael Powell and Liam Banks are climbing the school's all-time scoring list. Banks moved up to 23rd after scoring three goals at UMass. Powell became the 14th player to tally 200 career points with a goal and three assists at UMass. Springer moved into 10th place with four goals against the Minutemen.
Pfeifer Records 300th Career Save at Massachusetts
Sophomore goaltender Jay Pfeifer is averaging 13 saves in SU's last four games. He is coming off back-to-back 14-save performances against Hofstra and UMass. Pfeifer recorded a season-high 16 saves in the win against Cornell. In the loss to Rutgers, he had eight saves. Against Loyola, Pfeifer played 38 minutes, recorded eight saves and allowed just two goals. He helped the SU defense limit Loyola to a total of six goals, the fewest the Orangemen have allowed all season.
Pfeifer has started every game in goal for Syracuse this season. He has been the Orangemen's starting goalie the past 29 outings, as he started in all 17 games a year ago.
So far this season, Pfeifer has saved 132 shots. He recorded 14 saves in each of the first two games against Army and Virginia. He only allowed seven goals at Army. He had two saves against Fairfield, 13 saves against Johns Hopkins, and 10 against Princeton and Hobart.
The 16 goals given up by Pfeifer in the loss to Virginia marked the most goals he has given up in his career.
This season, Pfeifer has faced 397 shots. He owns a .537 save percentage and a 10.16 goals against average.
Pfeifer reached a milestone in the UMass game when he recorded his 300th career save. He now owns 307 career stops.
Syracuse is 22-7 with Pfeifer starting in goal.
Crockett Comes Alive with Two Fourth-Quarter Goals at UMass
Freshman Brian Crockett has settled in on SU's first midfield line. He came alive last weekend in the fourth quarter against Massachusetts. With SU trailing 12-10 with less than 10 minutes left in regulation, Crockett scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 12-12 by the 6:49 mark. He scored with an outside shot from up top and then drove in from the right side.
Crockett is the top-scoring freshman on the team with 23 points (15 goals, eight assists). He is the fifth-leading scorer on the team overall. Like Lindsay, Crockett's first position is attack, but he has provided the Orangemen with another midfielder who has the ability to dodge and go to goal.
He scored 15 points in Syracuse's first six games, before being held without a point against Brown. Since then, he has tallied eight points in SU's last five games, including a one-goal, two assist effort against Rutgers. Earlier in the year, Crockett netted goals in wins against Loyola and Cornell. His best games came against Army and Fairfield, where he scored three goals and had one assist in each victory.
Banks Has 22 Points in SU's Last Seven Games (3.14 PPG)
Senior attackman Liam Banks returned to the field against Princeton March 22, for the first time since the 2001 national championship game. Due to personal reasons, Banks did not play last season. His return to game action was further delayed following a shoulder injury sustained in this year's Navy scrimmage. Banks, a two-time honorable mention All-American, was a starting attackman for the Orangemen in 2000 and 2001. He helped SU to the national championship in 2000 with six goals in the title game. Banks has played in 56 games during his career. He owns 74 goals, 80 assists and 154 points. At Hobart, Banks sparked the Orangemen with two goals and four assists, the most points for him since April 14, 2001, when he torched Rutgers for a goal and six assists. He followed that up with a goal and three assists in SU's 16-7 victory against Brown and had two goals and two assists at Loyola. Banks scored three goals last week against Massachusetts.
