Anthony Selected Third in NBA Draft

Carmelo Anthony will move from Central New York to Denver after the Nuggets selected Anthony with the third pick in the 2003 National Basketball Association Draft. The 2003 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Anthony is the first Orangeman to be selected that early in the NBA draft since Billy Owens was the Sacramento Kings third pick in 1991. The only two SU players to be selected higher were Derrick Coleman, who was the first overall selection in the 1990 draft, and Dave Bing, who was the second pick of the Detroit Pistons in 1966.

Anthony is the 13th SU basketball player to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft, and the first since 2000 when Etan Thomas was the 12th pick of the Dallas Mavericks. He is the 28th player to hear his name announced at the NBA draft during head coach Jim Boeheim's 27 seasons as SU's leader.

Anthony led Syracuse to the NCAA Championship in April after averaging 22.2 points an 10.0 rebounds per game in his rookie season. He averaged 26.5 points and 12.0 rebounds against Texas and Kansas in the Final Four. Anthony was also named the NCAA East Regional MVP, Basketball Times Freshman of the Year, USBWA Freshman of the Year and a Sporting News first team All-American among other accolades.
