In Kent, Ohio, the Syracuse field hockey team lost a 1-0 decision in its first game of the 2003 season to Kent State at Dix Stadium on August 31.
The Golden Flashes were playing in their second game of the season after losing a 2-0 match to Michigan State the day before. Kent outshot the Orangewomen 10-6 in the second and deciding half.
Two juniors teamed up for the game's lone score as forward Corin Racicot's goal off Lauren Grandinetti's pass just under 10 minutes into the second half proved to be enough to earn the victory. The goal was scored on Racicot's lone shot of the game.
Kent State's senior goalie Jessica Creeden had six saves to earn her first shutout and victory of the year, while Syracuse junior Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo.) finished with seven saves.
Besides Wagner, the starters for Syracuse in the 2003 season opener were: Jackie Sheaffer (midfield), Leah McKay (midfield), Lindsay Peirson (midfield), Meredith Gettel (forward), Ann-Marie Guglieri (forward), Megan Stuart (forward), Meg Ryan (forward), Michelle Sola (back), Lindsay Kocher (back) and Joanne Lombard (back). Brittany Carriero, Erin Fitzgerald, Jessica Dahle, Ashley Fry and Paige Sullivan all saw action for SU.
Gettel took the most shots of any Orangewoman with four. Lombard attempted two shots in her first college game since the NCAA quarterfinals against Maryland in November, 2001.
The Orangewomen will look to notch their first victory of the season next weekend when they play two contests at the University of New Hampshire. On Sept. 5, SU takes on New Hampshire at 3 p.m. On Sept. 6, the Orangewomen will face Big Ten foe Iowa at 2 p.m.
