The Orangewomen scored their first win of the season on Wednesday night when they defeated Albany, 8-1. It was the most goals scored by an Orange outfit since a 9-0 shutout of Lowell in 1990.
This marks the third meeting between Syracuse and Central Michigan. SU owns a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series which began in 1997. That year, Syracuse posted a 5-0 win at Coyne Field. In 2000, the Chippewas visited SU again and were edged, 3-2.
On Sunday, Sept. 14, Syracuse hosts Columbia at 1 p.m.
Kathleen Parker is in her 26th season as head field hockey coach at Syracuse University. Her career record is 278-179-14. She ranks fifth among active Division I coaches in career victories. In 2001, Parker earned her fourth BIG EAST Coach of the Year distinction and was selected as the Mideast Region Coach of the Year. That same year, she guided the Orangewomen to the conference championship and the NCAA quarterfinals.
In 2001, Joanne Lombard scored four goals, mostly on penalty corner shots, to finish tied for sixth on the team in scoring. Due to a preseason injury, Lombard missed the 2002 campaign. Now she is back and is tied for the team lead with two goals. She scored against New Hampshire and against Iowa, both on penalty-corner shots.
Junior forward Meredith Gettel scored twice against Albany, giving her one more goal than she scored all of last season. It was the second two-goal game of her career. As a freshman, she netted two goals in a win against Quinnipiac and finished with a total of four goals. Last season, Gettel recorded just one goal against Villanova.
First-year players Megan Stuart, Meg Ricker and Ashley Fry each registered their first collegiate goals against Albany.
Syracuse took a 2-0 lead into halftime against the Great Danes behind goals by senior Jackie Sheaffer and junior Brittany Carriero. Each were unassisted off rebounds. Sheaffer is tied for the team lead with four points (one goal, two assists). As the inserter on corners, Sheaffer leads the team in assists. Carriero is SU's spark off the bench. It was her first goal since a 2-1 overtime loss to Connecticut at the end of last season.
The Orangewomen registered six goals in the second half against Albany. The prettiest goal of the night, SU's only assisted tally, was when sophomore forward Paige Sullivan carried the ball about 40 yards upfield, weaved her away around a couple of defenders, and then passed off to a diving Ricker on the left side.
Lindsay Peirson is SU's starting center midfielder. She has a goal and an assist on the season. Senior Ann-Marie Guglieri also has three points with one goal and one assist.
Junior Betsy Wagner is SU's starting goalkeeper this year. She owns a .647 save percentage and a 3.00 goals against average.
