"Everybody did really well," head coach Mac Gifford said. "Katie (Bramante) played very well. I hope she wins the whole thing (in Flight B), and I think she can. Ashley (Lipton) played well, too. She was tight in her first match, but won her second match. She's clearly one of the better players in the tournament."
In the top flight, freshman Ashley Lipton lost her first collegiate match to Lya Kushniravich of Binghamton. Lipton won her second match, 6-1, 6-1, against Alina Balasa of Rutgers to advance to the consolation final. Senior Trine Lise Juliussen had a bye in the first round, but lost to Erika Takeuchi of Cornell, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinal.
In Flight B, freshman Katie Bramante shut out her opponent in her first match for the Orange, 6-0, 6-0 against Erin Monaco of Binghamton. She then defeated Kara Maloy of Cornell, 6-4, 6-3, to earn the right to face Melissa Tu of Cornell in the semifinals Sunday morning. Freshman Carolina Huignard lost to Lauren Edelschein of Rutgers in three sets in her first college match. She will play Maria Anorga of Lehigh in the consolation semifinals Sunday morning.
Sophomore Wei-Ming Leong began her second season in Orange with two wins in Flight C singles, 6-0, 7-5 against Francesca Murasko-Blank of Lehigh, and 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 versus Helen Magomedeva of Rutgers. She will play Jennifer Liu of Cornell in the semifinals on Sunday. Freshman Kendyl Severino lost her first match for Syracuse in three sets, and will face Murasko-Blank in the consolation semifinal.
In doubles, Huignard and Lipton paired up in the Flight A bracket, winning their first match, 8-2, against Binghamton's top tandem. They then lost to Rachel Samson and Kristen Nowicki of Lehigh, 8-2, in the semifinal.
Both of SU's Flight B doubles teams are still in title contention. Bramante paired with senior Jessica Schlosser to defeat Ashley Donahue and Murasko-Blank of Lehigh, 8-2, in their first match. They then defeated Tu and Liying Wang of Cornell, 8-6, to advance to the semifinals. Leong and Juliussen, who posted an 8-0 record together in 2002-03, continued their winning ways with a 9-8(4) win against Maria del Carmen Anorga and Lindsay Long of Lehigh in the quarterfinals. They will play Kara Maloy and Kasia Preneta of Cornell in the semis.
