
Orangemen Soccer Wins Home Opener, 1-0 Against Albany

SYRACUSE, NY - Syracuse University sophomore Ilias Calaitzidis scored an unassisted goal at the 35:12 mark to give the Orangemen soccer team a 1-0 win against Albany at the Soccer Stadium at the Lampe Athletics Complex on Wednesday, September 3. The win was Syracuse's first of the season, improving its record to 1-1-0, while Albany's record goes to 0-1-1.
Syracuse outshot Albany, 18-14, and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Alim Karim had two saves, recording his third career shutout. Albany goalkeeper Bouna Coundol had 14 saves for the Great Danes.
The Orangemen will open BIG EAST Conference play on Sunday when they host Seton Hall at 1:00 p.m. at the Soccer Stadium at the Lampe Athletics Complex. The Pirates were picked to finish sixth in the league in the preseason coaches' poll, while Syracuse was picked to finish eighth. Tickets for Sunday's game are $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for SU students, senior citizens and youth ages 18 and under.
