SU Defeats Colgate In Big Orange Tournament Finale

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore Kristen Conway recorded 12 kills on 18 attempts and a .556 hitting percentage to lead the Syracuse volleyball team against Upstate rival Colgate, 3-0, in the final match of the Big Orange Tournament Saturday. SU won the games by scores of 30-14, 30-20 and 30-28.
Sophomore Jessica Logan posted 11 kills on 28 attempts, and senior Christen Casey had 13 digs. Sophomore Aila Dommestrup recorded 16 assists, sophomore Kathryn Dercher also had 16 assists, and senior Michaela Skelly posted 13 assists.
With 77 assists on the day, Dommestrup soared past Dena LaBarbera for seventh place on SU's career kills list with 792 in one-plus seasons. She is 40 assists behind Skelly who is in sixth place. Casey moved into seventh place on Syracuse's career digs ledger with 917. Casey, who passed Noreen Carroll, is 27 digs behind Desiree Hobbs.
For the Raiders, Allie Nichols had 16 assists. Caity Whiteaker led the attack with 12 kills, and Natalie Rawson had a team-high eight digs.
At 5:00 p.m., Siena took on Binghamton. The Bearcats defeated the Saints in three games, 30-19, 30-22, 30-22. Allison Beard of Binghamton posted seven kills on 11 attempts with one error for a .545 hitting percentage. Anne Crocus had 11 kills on 26 attempts, and Michele Heck had nine kills on 26 assists with eight digs. Jennifer Smith recorded eight kills on 22 attempts with 10 digs, and Nicole Savin had a match-high 11 digs. Ashley Meffert posted 36 assists.
For Siena, Katie Borrett recorded 31 assists and five digs. Lauren Weber had 11 kills on 28 attempts with eight digs. Christie Gustafson had seven kills on 22 attempts with eight digs, and Amanda Carrk posted a team-high nine digs.
Smith and Crocus of Binghamton were named to the All-Tournament team, along with Whiteaker of Colgate. Casey and Conway of Syracuse were named to the team, and sophomore Orangewoman Kelly Duan was named Tournament MVP.
Syracuse (7-1) travels to Lexington, Ky., for the Kentucky Conference Challenge. The Orangewomen will take on the host Wildcats along with teams from Virginia and Wright State.
