Syracuse University student-athletes raised $7,500 at the seventh annual Dollar Day at the Dome prior to SU’s game against Florida State. Student-athletes from SU’s women’s basketball, men’s and women’s rowing, women’s lacrosse, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, tennis and men’s and women’s track & field teams interacted with fans outside the Dome collecting donations for the United Way of Central New York. These student athletes were easily identified with their white shirts emblazoned with the logo “’CUSE Cares” on the front and Citizens Bank on the back. The group raised the second-highest amount of money since the program began in 1998. The highest total raised is $10,807 in 2001, which was raised two weeks after the September 11 attacks on the U.S.
In 2003, 167 student-athletes from SU’s womens basketball, men’s and women’s rowing, lacrosse, track & field, and swimming and diving teams raised almost $4,400 for the United Way. In 2002, more than 180 Syracuse University student-athletes raised $5,525 for the United Way. In 2001, SU student-athletes collected more than $10,800 for the United Way September 11th Fund on September 22 prior to SU’s game against Auburn. In seven years, SU student-athletes have collected more than $40,400 for the United Way. The United Way of Central New York helps thousands of people in our community with 129 quality programs at its 43 member agencies.
Dollar Day at the Dome is just one of many ‘Cuse Cares community service projects SU student-athletes are involved with in this area. The ‘Cuse Cares Program, supported by Citizens Bank – New York, is the community outreach program for student-athletes at Syracuse University. SU’s student-athletes have been recognized with SU’s Chancellor’s Award for Public Service in each of the past seven years for their volunteer efforts in the community. Citizens Bank, currently doing business in New York under the Charter One Bank name, invests in and is a leader in the communities it serves.
