Volleyball Set for Match Against St. John's

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse volleyball team returns home for a BIG EAST match against St. John’s at the Women’s Building on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. The Orange is 18-5 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST.
Syracuse defeated the Cornell Big Red, 3-1, on Tuesday night, Oct. 19. SU was able to win the match by capturing wins in games one (30-24), two (30-26) and four (30-25), while Cornell won the third game (27-30). Three Orange student-athletes recorded doubles in the match. Sophomore Aila Dommestrup had 58 assists and 11 digs, while classmate Kelly Duan had a team-high 23 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Cheryl Cobbina made 10 kills and a team-high 17 digs. Senior Morgan Jones had 40 attacks in the match to move her into seventh place on SU’s career list with 2,599 attacks. Jones also tied her career-high with nine digs.
The Red Storm enter the match with a 14-7, 0-2 BIG EAST record. St. John’s has lost its last two decisions to Pittsburgh, 3-2, and most recently, West Virginia, 3-2. The Red Storm is ninth in the BIG EAST standings. Heading into this week’s action, St. John’s is tied for third in the BIG EAST in conference matches in service aces with a 1.40 average. The Red Storm has the league’s leading server in Lisa Tedder, who has 0.60 aces in conference matches. LaToya Blunt is eighth with 0.40 service aces per game. On defense, Nicole Colaluca is second in BIG EAST matches in digs per game, averaging 7.00 digs.
Syracuse and St. John’s meet for the 11th consecutive season. SU won the first match between the schools in 1994, but has lost the last four meetings. The all-time series record is tied 5-5. Last season, St. John’s beat SU in a five-game battle, 30-26, 28-30, 30-28, 26-30, 7-15 in Alumni Hall.
