SU's Homecoming 2004 activities continue Friday night with a parade at 6:00 p.m. and a Pep Rally in the Carrier Dome at 7:30 p.m.
“Homecoming presents a unique opportunity for students and alumni to share in both age-old traditions as well as new traditions at our alma mater,” said Donald C. Doerr, Assistant Vice President of Alumni Relations. “The experiences that students have on campus will stay with them forever, even as they come back to campus as alumni.
All are welcome to join the SU Homecoming Parade as community members march and cheer to the Dome. The event will feature a banner competition sponsored by the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and free giveaways. The parade begins at the Schine Student Center, 6:00 p.m.
Rock the Dome at the Homecoming Pep Rally, with Otto the Orange, the SU Marching Band, cheerleaders, dance team and football team! Syracuse University first celebrated Homecoming in 1930 with the Orange facing off against Pittsburgh. Homecoming’s only event was the football game. It took ten years for the next Homecoming to take place on campus; in 1940, SU revived the football game and offered a few activities that would become traditions, such as a Homecoming King and Queen. Growing in popularity over the years, Homecoming incorporated parades, pageants, and pep rallies. Student involvement was so heavy that Homecoming was overseen by the sophomore class.
During the late ‘50s, SU went through a fierce rivalry with Colgate; rowdy behavior disbanded the game until 1962. Homecoming survived through the ‘70s and ‘80s, complete with Homecoming King and Queens, banner competitions, parades, picnics, and dances. “Orangemania” was developed in the ‘80s as an initiative to revive school spirit; however, by the ‘90s Homecoming events were sporadic and largely viewed as “Greek only.” In 2002, the entire campus celebrated a more inclusive Homecoming with a weeklong schedule of events, including a pep rally, football game, banner competition, and sold-out kick off concert.
