New Haven, Conn. – For the first time all season, the Walter Camp Football Foundation has named one player – Diamond Ferri of Syracuse University – as both its Division I-A National Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week for the games ending November 27.
Ferri was all over the field in the Orange’s 43-27 win at #17 Boston College, a victory that gave SU a share of the BIG EAST regular-season title. Ferri, who started the game in his regular position in the defensive backfield, was thrust into a role as running back after an injury to junior Damien Rhodes, who was starting for the injured senior Walter Reyes, late in the first quarter. Ferri then proceeded to rush for a game-high 141 yards (on 29 carries) and two touchdowns (7 and 4 yards) against the league’s top rushing defensive unit.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Everett, Mass. native recorded six tackles (4 solo) and intercepted one pass which he returned 44 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Ferri also contributed on special teams, returning the first two punts of his career. With the victory, Syracuse (6-5, 4-2) became bowl-eligible and moved into a four-way tie for first place in the BIG EAST (with Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and Boston College).
Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven-based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.
