Former Syracuse wide receiver Marvin Harrison became the fastest player in NFL history to reach 800 receptions last night for the Indianapolis Colts on Monday Night Football. Harrison became the 11th player to reach the milestone and did it in only 131 games, 23 games faster than Jerry Rice’s previous record of 154 games.
Harrison broke another record later on Monday night. He and quarterback Peyton Manning became the top quarterback-wide receiver tandem in NFL history, connecting 668 times. The duo passed the old mark of 663 set by Jim Kelly and Andre Reed.
Monday Night Football featured three other former SU student-athletes now on the Colts, Dwight Freeney, James Mungro and Josh Thomas. Freeney tallied three solo tackles, including two sacks of Vikings’ quarterback Daunte Culpepper. Mungro had one catch for four yards and Thomas played primarily on special teams.
Twenty-six former SU football players are currently on 16 different NFL rosters. Former Orange standout Donovan McNabb has led the Philadelphia Eagles to a 7-1 record. McNabb has 2,081 yards on 173-of-270 passing for 14 touchdowns.
Former Orange fullback Kyle Johnson had three catches for 46 yards and his first career touchdown on Sunday, Nov. 7 versus the Houston Texans.
