THIBODAUX, La. - Junior Haley Larsen threw her first career shutout, blanking McNeese State, 2-0, on Saturday, February 21 at the Mardi Gras Mambo hosted by Nicholls State. The win improved the Orangewomen’s record to 1-1 in tournament action and 3-6 overall.
Larsen (1-3) threw her first complete game of the season, scattering six hits. Larsen tied her season high with five strikeouts. She was especially effective pitching out of trouble, stranding nine Cowgirl runners, including five in scoring position.
Junior outfielder Tanya Rose drove in both of the Orangewomen’s runs with a single and a solo home run, her first of the season. Senior Rachel Park also had two hits in the game. Rose and Park accounted for all four of the Orangewomen’s hits in the game.
Corrie Hale was the loser for McNeese State (3-8). Hale (0-3) walked two and struck out one in the complete-game effort.
Syracuse scored first in the top of the third inning against the Cowgirls. A leadoff walk and an error on a sacrifice put two runners on for Rose who delivered an RBI single to right-center field. The Orangewomen caught a break in the bottom of the second when an apparent swinging bunt single that would have scored a run was nullified because of batter’s interference for the third out.
SU extended its lead to 2-0 on Rose’s solo shot to left in the top of the fifth inning. The Orangewomen put only one runner on base following the home run.
Syracuse continues play at the Mardi Gras Mambo with a 10 a.m. eastern time matchup with Nicholls State. SU defeated the Lady Colonels, 1-0 in 11 innings, on Friday.
