SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Cassie Morales hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Syracuse a 5-4 victory against Boston College in the Orangewomen’s BIG EAST opener on Friday, April 2. The Orangewomen lost the second game of the twin bill, 5-3.
Syracuse is now 15-15 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Eagles improved to 20-13 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST.
The game-one victory was SU’s school-record tying sixth straight. It also marked the 100th win in both the program’s history and head coach Mary Jo Firnbach’s career. Firnbach has guided the program since its first season in 2000.
Morales’ home run in game one was one of her two hits in the contest and four in the doubleheader. With Syracuse trailing 4-3 and a runner on with one out in the sixth, Morales drilled a pitch over the left-centerfield fence for her fourth long ball of the season, giving the Orangewomen a 5-4 lead it would not give up. Morales singled twice and also doubled on the day.
Senior Rachel Park had three hits and drove in two runs for the doubleheader. Park went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the opener. She drove in a run with a double in the sixth inning of game one that cut the lead to 4-3 and set the stage for Morales’ heroics.
Junior Tanya Rose had a hit and an RBI in the first game, extending her school-record hitting streak to 13 games. The streak stopped there, however, as Rose went 0-for-4 in the nightcap.
Junior Tiffany Robinson collected two hits and scored a run in the first game, while junior catcher Jaime Grillo had two hits and a run in the second game. Freshman Erin Gray notched a career-best two hits and scored a run in the nightcap. Junior Melisa Kelly also had two hits in the second game, driving in two runs. She walked and scored in the opener.
Senior Haley Larsen threw all 14 innings for the Orangewomen. Larsen (6-6) earned the win in the opener, allowing two earned runs and five hits in seven innings. She struck out three and walked two. She was the losing pitcher in the nightcap, allowing five runs and 10 hits.
Tekae Malandris (6-4) was the losing pitcher in game for the Eagles, while Michelle Daly (5-2) earned the win in the nightcap. Colleen Reiche picked up her first save of the season in the Eagles’ game-two win.
Britney Thompson led the Eagles at the plate with four hits, including a two-run home run. Elena Ferrero, Lisa Field and Ashley Obrest each had two hits in the doubleheader.
BC took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one on an RBI single by Erin Mackey. The Orangewomen came back with two runs in the home half of the second. Rose drove in a run with a single, while Park plated the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice.
The Eagles hung a three-spot in the fourth inning. Thompson’s two-run homer was the big blow of the inning. Field also drove in a run.
Syracuse put up three of its own in the sixth. Robinson led off with a single and came all the way around on a double by Park. Morales then went deep to give SU the win. Larsen retired the Eagles in order in the seventh to secure the victory.
BC scored two runs in the first frame of game two. Feerrero and Elyse Meredith were each credited with an RBI. Syracuse got one back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Alexis Switenko.
Boston College opened the game up in the fourth with three runs on four hits and two SU errors. Obrest and Jacqui Goodchild each had run scoring hits. Syracuse tried another sixth-inning comeback, but fell just short. After one-out singles by Gray and junior Katie Kaempfer, Kelly belted a ball into the right-center field gap to bring both runners around. The Orangewomen couldn’t push home another run, stranding three runners in their final two at-bats.
Syracuse will remain at home for its second doubleheader of the weekend. The Orangewomen host Connecticut on Sunday, April 4 at 12 p.m.
