Rose Homers in 3-2 Loss to Wisconsin

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The Syracuse softball team lost its last game of the National Invitational Softball Tournament hosted by San Jose State University, 3-2 to the University of Wisconsin. The Orangewomen finished tournament play with 2-3 mark and now stand at 9-14 overall.
Junior Tanya Rose paced the Syracuse offense with two hits, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rose’s homer was the 13th of her career, tying her with teammate Alexis Switenko for first on the SU career list. Her first-inning single extended her season-high hitting streak to seven games. Rose was named to the all-tournament after hitting .438 in SU's five games.
Freshman designated player Ashley Ryan made her first career start, recording her first two hits of the season. Senior Rachel Park also had two hits in the game. SU left nine runners on base in the game, five of them in scoring position.
Freshman Courtney Mosch was the losing pitcher for the Orangewomen. Mosch (5-9) gave up three runs on five hits in three and two-thirds innings. She struck out two without allowing a walk. Senior Haley Larsen tossed three and two-thirds innings of relief. She allowed no runs on one hit, striking out two. Katie Layne was the winning pitcher in relief for the Badgers (13-8). Layne (7-2) threw three and one-third innings, allowing no runs on two hits.
Wisconsin opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Athena Vasquez led off with a single through the right side and was sacrificed to second. Boo Gillette delivered an RBI single to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead. Two more runs scored on a bases-loaded single by Tera Hamilton and an outfield error on the play.
The Orangewomen got into the score column in the bottom of the fourth. A one-out single by Ryan set up Rose’s two-run blast, her third homer of the season. Rose has 13 hits in her last 24 at-bats (.542) in SU’s last seven games.
Syracuse will try and stop its three-game losing streak when it travels to Delaware State for the Capital Classic on March 19-21. The Orangewomen will play Stony Brook, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Delaware State on Friday and Saturday before beginning the bracket play portion of the tournament on Sunday.
