
Five Rowers Commit to SU for Next Year

SYRACUSE, N.Y.
-- Orangewomen rowing head coach Kris Sanford has announced that five student-athletes have committed to compete for Syracuse beginning in the 2004-05 season.Lauren Piro, Sarah Weir, Erica Mahon, Allison Doodeman and Lindsay Lentini have all agreed to join the women’s rowing program next year.
Piro, a native of Greenfield Center, N.Y., helped lead Saratoga Springs High School to three New York State Rowing Championships. She was also a member of the gold-medal winning junior women’s four boat at the 2003 Canadian Henley. Piro participated in the Junior Women’s National Team Development Camp in the summer of 2003. She also competed for Saratoga Springs’ swimming and diving team and was named the school’s Most Improved Rower and the Most Valuable Swimmer in 2001. Piro’s great uncle, Henry, earned three letters as a member of the Orange football team from 1938-40.
Weir, who hails from Ottawa, Ontario, is a member of the Ottawa Rowing Club, which was picked as having the 2003 Female Junior Crew of the Year. She rowed in the three seat of the senior women’s 4+ boat that won the 2003 Ontario Provincial Championship. She also was named the club’s Female Novice of the Year in 2002. Weir attends Merivale High School.
Mahon, from Niantic, Conn., is a four-time member of the crew team at East Lyme High School and served as a member of the Women’s Rowing Junior National Development Camp Team in 2003. She was also head of the 2003 Connecticut Youth 4+ Championship boat. Weir has been a member of the Thames River Sculls club for four years. Mahon’s father, Bryan, competed for SU’s crew team from 1978-82.
Doodeman attends Denis Morris Catholic High School and is from Thorold, Ontario. She earned the school’s Senior Oarswoman of the Year Award in 2003. She has also competed for St. Catharines Rowing Club for three years. As a sophomore, Doodeman was a member of the junior "B" quad team that won the gold medal at the Canadian Henley. A year later she was part of the junior "A" quad that won gold at the event. Doodeman also competed for Ontario at the Canada Cup and helped the women’s junior "A" 8 and junior 4 to silver medals.
Like Piro, Lentini also attends Sartatoga Springs High School. She was part of the junior women’s 4 that won the gold medal at the 2003 Canadian Henley. Lentini also rowed for the Canadian-American-Mexican Team that won the gold in the women’s eight and four races.
The Orangewomen recently completed their spring break training trip to Miami, Fla. and will open the spring season by hosting Boston University and Duke University on March 27.
