GEORGETOWN, Del. – The Syracuse softball team scored a season-high 10 runs on 15 hits, defeating Stony Brook 10-2 in five innings at the War on the Shore Tournament hosted by Delaware State Universitiy. The Orangewomen snapped a three-game losing streak and now stand at 10-14 for the season.
Sophomore Cassie Morales recorded three hits, including a two-run home run and a double. She drove in three runs for the game. Sophomore Alexis Switenko also drove in three runs, going 2-for-2 with a walk. Junior outfielder Tanya Rose went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Rose has now hit safely in a season-best eight consecutive games. Senior Rachel Park also had three hits and scored three times. Senior Nikki Lincoln had two hits and a run batted in, while freshman Courtney Mosch drove in two runs on her first career homer.
Mosch was also the winning pitcher for the Orangewomen. She threw five innings, allowing only two runs, one of them earned, and two hits. Mosch (6-9) struck out five and walked two.
After retiring the Seawolves in order in the top of the first, the Orangewomen offense scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Five of the first six batters reached base with Switenko and Lincoln providing RBI singles.
Stony Brook evened the score in the third inning. A two-out single by Jane Stein drove in the first run and an SU error allowed the tying run to come across. The Orangewomen regained the lead in the home half of the frame on a Stony Brook fielding error with the bases loaded.
SU broke open the game with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Morales drove in the first run with a double and Switenko followed with a two-run double to push the lead to 6-2. Mosch then followed with a two-run blast to center field. Morales ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run to right that gave the Orangewomen a 10-2 advantage, invoking the eight-run rule.
The victory was Syracuse’s first eight-run win since a 13-3 victory against Siena on April 24 of last season.
Syracuse continues tournament play on Saturday. Because of weather issues, the tournament schedule has been changed and will be finalized later on Friday.
