Syracuse lead Maryland at the Half

Junior Hakim Warrick paced SU with 13 points in the first half, while junior Craig Forth contributed eight points. Sophomore Gerry McNamara, who scored a Syracuse NCAA Tournament record 43 points in the Orangemen’s first-round win against BYU, was held without a field goal in the first half and finished the period with two points.
Warrick and Forth combined for SU’s first 14 points to give the Orange a 14-10 lead with 10:16 left in the first half. McNamara and freshman Terrence Roberts each added a pair of free throws to increase the Syracuse advantage to 18-10 at 8:55. Syracuse’s zone defense held the Terrapins without a field goal for 9:24 until a layup by John Gilchrist cut the SU lead to 18-14 with 5:52 left in the opening period. A three-point play by Maryland’s Jamar Smith cut the SU lead to two 21-19 at the 1:57 mark, but the Orangemen responded with a 9-0 run to extend their margin to 30-19. A dunk by Warrick gave the Orangemen a 32-22 edge at the break.
Gilchrist and Smith led Maryland with five points each in the first half.
