Orangewomen Win Two at Delaware State Tournament

GEORGETOWN, Del. – The Syracuse softball team scored 16 runs on 23 hits, five doubles and three home runs in two victories at the Mizuno War on the Shore hosted by Delaware State on March 20. SU defeated Pennsylvania, 13-1 in five innings, and followed that up with a 3-1 victory against the host Hornets. The Orangewomen have won three straight games and are now 12-14 for the season.
Eight players had hits in the opening game against the Quakers as SU tied a school record with 13 runs. Senior Rachel Park paced the offense with three hits, three runs scored and two runs batted in. Sophomore Cassie Morales went 2-for-4, including a double and a home run. Morales scored two runs and knocked in two more. Freshman Courtney Mosch had two hits, including her second home run of the season, scored twice and drove in three. Sophomore Alexis Switenko and junior Tiffany Robinson each had two hits and drove in a run. Junior Katie Kaempfer went 1-for-2 scoring twice and earning two RBI. Juniors Tanya Rose and Melissa Kelly each had a hit in the game.
Senior Haley Larsen was the winning pitcher, evening her record for the season at 5-5. Larsen threw five innings, allowing only three hits and one unearned run. She struck out four without allowing a walk.
In the second game of the day against the Hornets, Rose and Park combined to go 4-for-8 with two runs scored and two driven in. Rose extended her hitting streak to 10 games, just one shy of the school record. She led off the bottom of the first inning with her fourth home run of the season. It was only the second time an Orangewoman led off a game with a long ball (Christina Holowich, 3/16/02 vs. Wisconsin). Rose’s home run was the 14th of her career, pushing her past Switenko for Syracuse’s all-time record. Switenko was 1-for-3 with an RBI double in the contest, while Robinson contributed two more hits. Morales and Mosch each had hits in the game.
Mosch was the winning pitcher, allowing only one run on five hits in her ninth complete game of the season. Mosch (7-9) struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Syracuse plated six runs in the first inning against the Quakers. Mosch and Kaempfer both drove in two with bases-loaded singles. Robinson also drove in a run in the inning. Freshman Erin Gray scored a run after reaching base via a walk.
The Orangewomen took a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Switenko. After the Quakers scored their only run in the home half of the inning, Syracuse exploded for six more runs in the fifth. Park started the scoring with a bases-loaded double that scored two runs. Morales than made the score 12-1 with a three-run blast to left center. Mosch finished the scoring with a solo home run, her second in as many games.
SU scored first in the second game of the day, taking a 1-0 advantage on Rose’s leadoff home run. The Orangewomen extended the lead to 2-0 in the third on an RBI double by Switenko. The Hornets cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth, but SU was able to add an insurance run in the sixth inning. Park again delivered with the bases loaded, dropping a single into center field. Mosch completed the victory inducing three ground balls in three pitches in the seventh.
Syracuse will face Delaware at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 21. SU will conclude tournament action at either 12 p.m. or in the championship game at 2 p.m. pending the outcome of tomorrow’s tournament games.
