BALTIMORE - A 7-0 first-half run and six-straight goals to start the second 30 minutes propelled the top-ranked Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team to a 17-5 victory against No. 3-ranked Syracuse at Homewood Field. It was the largest margin of defeat for the Orangemen since a 19-6 loss to Cornell in 1987. Last year, Hopkins defeated Syracuse, 19-8 in the NCAA semifinals at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
It was the fewest amount of goals for the Orangemen since North Carolina held them to three in 1991. SU came into this contest leading the nation in scoring offense with 18.7 goals per game.
"There were a couple of sleepless nights this week facing us with their offense," said Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala. "It was something we were very concerned about. We put in a few new things this week and made a decision to go back to Scott Smith in goal. I think his play and our play at the face-off X was the difference in the game."
In the first half, Hopkins (5-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind goals by Byrne, Ford and Barrie. SU senior attackman Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) kept the Orangemen within one (3-2) when he answered with back-to-back goals in the final six minutes of the first quarter.
The Blue Jays took advantage of their face-off dominance (11 of 13 in the first half, 20 of 24 for the game) by rattling off seven-straight goals in the second quarter to increase their advantage to 10-2 by the 1:24 mark. Six different Hopkins players scored during the nine-minute spurt. Ford led the way with two goals. Syracuse put an end to the run with three seconds remaining in the opening half when Nee found sophomore attackman Brian Crockett (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown) on the crease. It was Crockett's team-high 14th goal of the season and it made the score 10-3 at halftime.
SU goalie Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) faced 28 shots from Hopkins in the first half and had eight saves.
After Ford registered his game-high fourth goal of the game at 10:54 of the third stanza and Kyle Dowd scored just a minute later to give JHU a 12-3 lead, SU pulled Pfeifer and inserted senior goaltender Nick Donatelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott). It was Donatelli's first appearance in a game this season. He made one save before Dowd netted his second goal at the 5:17 mark.
Greg Peyser scored on an outside shot with 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give the Blue Jays a 14-3 lead. Two unsportsmanlike penalties were called (one on each team) on the ensuing faceoff and Hopkins ran out the final seconds of the period with possession.
In the fourth quarter, Boland scored on a man-up goal off a feed from Rewkowski and Barrie gave Hopkins its largest lead of the day (16-3) with an unassisted tally at the 11:14 mark. The Orangemen recorded their first goal of the second half when Crockett delivered a long pass to senior attackman Alex Zink (Rowayton, Conn./Darien) who was parked on the crease with 9:33 left to play. Boland and Rewkowski connected again on the Blue Jays' 17th goal just a minute later. SU's Kevin Dougherty (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) tallied the game's final goal with 7:31 remaining in the contest.
Syracuse is 3-1 on the season and will be on the road again next week when it takes on No. 6 Princeton at Class of 1952 Stadium on March 27 at 3 p.m. CSTV is televising the game and it will be shown locally on Time Warner Sports (Channel 26).
