Sophomore attackman Brian Crockett (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown) scored a career-high six goals, including four in the second half as the No. 3-ranked Syracuse men's lacrosse team defeated No. 15 Virginia, 18-12, in front of 3,337 at Klöckner Stadium. The Orangemen improve to 2-0 on the season, while the defending national champion Cavaliers now find themselves with a 1-3 record.
The two teams exchanged two-goal leads in the first half. SU jumped out to a 2-0 edge after Crockett threw in a behind-the-back shot to open the contest at the 14:26 mark. Senior attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) then stuffed in a pretty pass from Steve Lykudis (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) at 13:38. UVA's Matt Ward tied the contest at 2-2 with back-to-back goals by the 12:04 mark. Syracuse long-stick midfielder John Gallagher (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) scored his first collegiate goal while clearing the ball. He ran up the middle of the field and the Cavaliers failed to stop the ball. Gallagher gave SU a 3-2 lead with 10:18 remaining in the first half. Matt Poskay and Joe Yevoli each netted goals at the end of the quarter and Virginia led, 4-3, at the end of one.
The Cavaliers opened up their largest lead of the game (5-3) at 12:02 of the second quarter after Nathan Kenney converted a Yevoli pass. The Orangemen then registered four-straight goals, two by senior midfielder Steve Vallone (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) and one by Crockett and senior attackman Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin). SU built a 7-5 advantage with 4:45 left to play in the second period and never trailed again.
Virginia did close the gap to 7-6 with a goal by J.J. Morrissey right before halftime.
The story of the game was the way the Orangemen came out to start the third quarter. They scored on four of their first six shots of the period. Nee found Crockett at 14:29. Vallone made it 9-6 with his third goal of the contest at 13:51. Morrissey kept UVA within two (9-7) with a goal at the 13:01 mark, but Powell and senior midfielder Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland-Panas) combined for SU's next three goals. Powell scored at 12:36 and Lindsay netted back-to-back goals to give the Orangemen a 12-7 lead with 9:51 remaining in the third quarter.
Yevoli canned two of his team-high three goals in the middle of the third quarter to close within 12-9. Powell helped push the Orangemen back ahead by five (14-9) with an assist to Alex Zink (Rowyaton, Conn./Darien) on a man-up opportunity and an unassisted tally with nine seconds remaining in the third period.
Crockett extended Syracuse's lead to 16-9 with two goals to start the fourth quarter. He recorded his sixth goal of the contest with 4:35 remaining off a feed from Vallone. That score gave Syracuse a 17-11 lead.
Matt Ward led Virginia in scoring with three goals and four assists. Yevoli added three goals and two assists.
Powell moved up on three different career lists. He is now sixth on SU's all-time assists chart (122 assists). He is tied for 15th in goals with John Zulberti (1986-89) with 109 and he cracked the top 10 in career points, surpassing Michael Springer (2000-03) for ninth place with 231 career points. He now needs 57 points to become the Orangemen's all-time leading scorer.
Syracuse hosts No. 8-ranked Notre Dame at 7 p.m. on March 11 at the Carrier Dome.
