Last season, Belton served as a team captain and played in all 12 games for SU, starting eight. Belton also played on the kickoff return team, as well as the PAT and field goal units. He received SU’s Ray Martino Award, which is given to the player who demonstrates loyalty, enthusiasm, and perseverance. Belton ended his career with a streak of 39 carries without being tackled for a loss, including all 35 of his carries in 2003. The longest rush of Belton’s career was for 48 yards against Rutgers in 2001. Belton transferred to SU in 2001 after playing two seasons for Northeast Mississippi Community College.
Belton is one of seven Orangemen in the NFL’s Class of 2004. Seniors Christian Ferrara, Johnnie Morant and Kevin Sampson were all drafted by NFL teams over the weekend. Josh Thomas has agreed to contract terms with the Indianapolis Colts, Darryl Kennedy agreed to a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Rich Scanlon will join Sampson with the Kansas City Chiefs. At the conclusion of the 2003 NFL season, 27 former Syracuse University football student-athletes were on NFL rosters.
