Sophomore attackman Brian Crockett posted a career-high seven points on six goals to help No. 3 Syracuse to a 13-6 victory against No. 11-ranked Brown (6-1) at Stevenson Field. It was the second time this season that Crockett registered six goals. He also scored six at Virginia on March 6.
The Bears quickly jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter behind two goals apiece from Christopher Mucciolo and Chazz Woodson. Crockett got SU on the scoreboard at the 9:30 mark. Senior attackman Michael Powell found Crockett with 3:49 left in the first quarter to pull the Orangemen within 4-2 and then Sean Lindsay tallied an extra-man goal off a feed from Brian Nee with 48 seconds remaining in the opening period to pull SU to within 4-3. The two goals before the end of the period swung the momentum in Syracuse's favor.
The Orangemen outscored Brown, 4-1, in the second quarter. Powell, Lindsay, Crockett and Kevin Dougherty all registered unassisted goals to put their team ahead by three (7-4). The Bears put an end to the run when Mucciolo scored off a pass from Woodson on a man-up opportunity with 25 seconds remaining in the period. SU went to the lockerroom with a 7-5 advantage.
Syracuse increased its margin to 9-5 with two quick goals by Crockett and Powell by the 9:39 mark of the third period. Crockett scored again off a pass from Dougherty at 7:44 to give the Orangemen a 10-5 lead. The defense tightened and junior goalie Jay Pfeifer came up with some big second-half saves to hold the Bears to just one second-half goal.
Nee and Crockett each scored two goals to start the fourth quarter. Freshman Steven Brooks tallied his second goal of the season with 7:31 remaining in the contest with a hard outside shot to put SU up 13-5.
Syracuse changed goalies after Brooks' goal and Nick Donatelli played the final 7:30.
Rory Hyland recorded Brown's sixth goal off an assist from Richard Tuohey with 3:52 remaining in the game.
Syracuse improved to 6-1 on the season and will next be in action on Saturday, April 10 against Loyola at the Carrier Dome.
