SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The 18th-ranked Orangewomen rowing team will attempt to defend the Orange Challenge Cup when they compete against Pennsylvania and Northeastern in Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday, April 10.
Syracuse has won the trophy in two out of the last three seasons (2003 and 2001) and have claimed the Cup three times since the schools began competing for it in 1979. SU's first win in the regatta came in 1984.
Norheastern has the most Cup wins with 12 and Pennsylvania has won it nine times. The trophy was not presented in 1994 due to inclement weather, which forced the regatta to be contested as two 1,000-meter races instead of the normal 2,000-meter competition.
The Orangewomen are 1-3 this season with their only win coming against Duke on March 27. In SU's most recent outing, the varsity eight was defeated by Yale and Cornell on April 3.
Northeastern posted wins against Boston College, Dartmouth, and Buffalo on the Charles River on April 3 and owns a record of 3-2.
Pennsylvania is 3-1 on the spring season. The Red and Blue swept all five competitions against Navy on the Schuylkill River last week to win the Class of '91 Trophy.
