WASHINGTON -- Senior attackman Michael Powell scored six points and became the Syracuse men's lacrosse all-time leading scorer (288 points) and goaltender Jay Pfeifer tied his career high of 19 saves in the Orangemen's 13-9 victory against Georgetown at Harbin Field. It was the regular-season finale for both teams, who now await the announcement of the 2004 NCAA Tournament bracket on Monday, May 10, at 3:40 p.m. on ESPNews.
A close game throughout, the two teams played to a 3-3 first-quarter tie. The Hoyas went ahead 6-5 at halftime thanks to two goal apiece from Sean Denihan and Trevor Casey. SU's Brian Crockett, who finished with a game-high four goals, scored two in the first half.
Powell tied the game at 6-6 with an outside shot at 10:10 of the third quarter. There were three lead changes in the third quarter, the final one that saw the Orangemen take a 9-8 lead behind a slippery shot from senior attackman Brian Nee with 2:20 remaining in the period. It was Nee's second of three goals and he stuck it in between GU goalie Rich D'Andrea and the near goalpost.
No. 4 Syracuse never trailed again. Powell fed Nee for a man-up goal at 14:33 of the fourth quarter. That assist tied Powell with his brothers Casey and Ryan Powell for the all-time points record at SU. He surpassed them with point No. 288 when he dished off to Crockett with 12:17 remaining in the contest. The Orangemen displayed their unselfishness with their final two goals. Dougherty kicked a cross-field pass over to Lindsay for a hard outside crank at 3:44 and Nee set up Crockett's fourth goal with 2:10 remaining.
Pfeifer was huge in the second half with 11 saves. He denied Hoya shooters easy looks and took pressure off the defense who had to contend with the Georgetown offense quite a bit because of the success of Andy Corno at the face-off X. Corno won 18 of 24 draws for the Hoyas.
Syracuse improves to 11-2 on the season, while No. 5 Georgetown ends the regular season with a 10-3 record.
