Powell Wins Tewaaraton Trophy for Second Time in His Career
6/4/2004 10:48:20 AM | Men's Lacrosse
Senior attackman Michael Powell became the first two-time winner of the Tewaaraton Trophy, an award which has been presented annually since 2001 to the best player in collegiate lacrosse. Powell received his 2004 trophy at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on June 3. He was also the Tewaaraton recipient in 2002 after he led the Orange to its eighth NCAA championship his sophomore year.
Powell saved his best for last. He had the highest-scoring season of his career, leading SU in scoring for the fourth consecutive campaign, with 89 points (47 goals, 42 assists). He helped the Orange to its ninth NCAA title with a goal and five assists in the championship game against Navy. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
The only Orange lacrosse player to ever earn first-team All-America recognition all four years, Powell is also just the fourth Division I player in lacrosse history to accomplish this. Del Dressel of Johns Hopkins was the last four-time first-team All-American in 1986.
In his senior year, Powell became SU's all-time leading scorer, surpassing the record of 287 points compiled by each of his brothers, Casey and Ryan Powell. Michael Powell finished with 307 career points (150 goals, 157 assists), becoming the first Division I player since Brown's Darren Lowe in 1992 to reach the 300-point milestone. Powell is one of just four Division I players to score 300+ points during his career. The others besides Lowe were: Joe Vasta of Air Force (1983-86) and Gary Hanley of Loyola (1978-81).
One of the best athletes to ever wear a Syracuse uniform in any sport, Powell will long be remembered for his exceptional quickness and tremendous stick skills. He has a chance to become the sport's first four-time Turnbull winner when the Attackman of the Year and the other player of the year awards are announced next weekend at the USILA All-American banquet. Powell has been the nation's attackman of the year for the past three seasons. He likely will be the first to win it four times since the inception of the award in 1946.
CSTV: College Sports Television (www.collegesports.com), will televise the fourth annual Tewaaraton Trophy Awards Ceremony on Thursday, July 1, at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
