Barber Selected to Groza Award Watch List

SYRACUSE, NY – Syracuse University senior kicker Collin Barber is one of 30 student-athletes on the Lou Groza Collegiate Kicker Award preseason watch list. Presented by the FedEx Orange Bowl, the award is named in honor of legendary Cleveland Browns’ kicker, Lou Groza, who is regarded as the first kicker to be considered an offensive weapon.
Barber enters his final season at SU ranked third on the career PATs made list with 87 and tied for sixth in career field goals made with 28. As a junior, Barber was a second-team BIG EAST selection and an ECAC Division I All-Star. He ranked second in the BIG EAST with a 75.0 field goal percentage and third with a 97.1 PAT percentage. Barber tied for eighth in the league in overall scoring and third in scoring by kick with 6.3 points per game.
Barber is joined on the watch list by former finalists Trey DiCarlo of Oklahoma, Mike Nugent of Ohio State, Jared Siegel of Oregon and, last year’s Groza Award winner, Jonathan Nichols of Mississippi. Barber is the only BIG EAST Conference kicker on the preseason list.
The Lou Groza Award is presented each December to the nation’s top Division I college place-kicker as determined by a national voting panel comprised of all Division I head coaches, sports writers and sportscasters from around the country, conference officials, various NFL kickers and all previous Groza Award finalists.
Syracuse begins the season on Sunday, September 5 at Purdue. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC. SU then plays at Buffalo on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. The Orange kicks off the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 18 against Cincinnati at 12:00 p.m. SU will also host Rutgers (Oct. 2 at 12:00 p.m.), Florida State (Oct. 9), Connecticut (Oct. 30) and Pittsburgh (Nov. 6).
