SYRACUSE, NY – The Carrier Dome is the symbol of SU football. When fans think of past Orange teams, they cannot help but think of the games played at “The Loud House”. In 25 days, the Orange kicks off their season at Purdue. Two weeks later, they open their 25th season at the Carrier Dome.
The Carrier Dome has been the home of SU football since September 20, 1980. On that day, Syracuse opened the stadium in style, a 36-24 victory over Miami (OH) in front of 50,564 Orange fans.
Since that day, many historic and memorable games have been played in The Dome. In 1984, Syracuse scored an improbable victory by defeating top-ranked Nebraska 17-9. A victory on November 21, 1987 against West Virginia clinched the first undefeated regular season for SU since 1959. A 66-13 thumping against Miami clinched SU their third straight BIG EAST Conference title in 1998.
Last season, Syracuse finished 5-2 at home. A season-high 48,170 fans came out to watch SU dominate Notre Dame 38-12 in the season finale.
Overall, SU owns a 99-41-2 record at the Carrier Dome (.699 winning percentage), including undefeated seasons in 1987, 1988, and 2001. The Orange will look for their 100th victory plus many more this upcoming season. They host nationally recognized Florida State. They will also host BIG EAST rivals Rutgers, Connecticut and Pittsburgh in addition to future BIG EAST member Cincinnati.
Men’s Basketball also calls the Carrier Dome home. They have posted a record of 342-67 (.836 winning percentage) in The Dome thanks to a huge fan support. SU has led the NCAA in attendance 11 different seasons and owns the NCAA on-campus attendance record. They broke their own mark when 33,071 fans showed up to watch the Orange battle Rutgers in 2003.
The Carrier Dome also houses Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse. The 2004 National Champions and nine-time champions Men’s Lacrosse team own a 145-14 home record at The Dome (.912 winning percentage). The Women’s Lacrosse team has been playing at the Carrier Dome since 1998 and have posted a 42-13 record (.764 winning percentage).
Syracuse begins the season on Sunday, September 5 at Purdue. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC. SU then plays at Buffalo on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. The Orange kicks off the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 18 against Cincinnati. SU will also host Rutgers (Oct. 2), Florida State (Oct. 9), Connecticut (Oct. 30) and Pittsburgh (Nov. 6).
