SYRACUSE, NY – Overall, 42 Syracuse players have earned All-America honors a total of 53 times. The list includes two three-time selections in addition to seven two-time winners. In 35 days, All-American candidates such as Walter Reyes, Matt Tarullo, Diamond Ferri and Adam Terry and the rest of the Syracuse team start their quest to add their names to the list when they kick off the 2004 season.
Guard/center Joe Alexander (1918-20) and halfback Floyd Little (1964-66) each earned the honor three-times. Among the two-time winners are guard Robert Fleck, halfback Ernie Davis, center Patrick Killorin, fullback Larry Csonka, defensive tackle Tim Green, center John Flannery, and cornerback Kevin Abrams was the last to accomplish the feat in 1996.
Bill Horr was the first ever SU player to receive All-America honors in 1908. He played tackle for a team that finished 6-3-1.
Jim Brown became the first Orange halfback to earn All-America status 48 years later. Brown was the first of many great SU backs. Four years later, Davis was selected for the first time and repeated again in 1961 when he also won the Heisman Trophy. Davis is the only SU player to win the prestigious trophy and he was the first African-American to do so. The other Syracuse All-American running backs were Little and Csonka.
Other notable SU honorees include wide receiver Art Monk, kicker Gary Anderson, wide receiver Rob Moore, wide receiver/kick returner Marvin Harrison, free safety Donovin Darius, and defensive end Dwight Freeney.
Freeney was the last Orange standout selected in 2001. He set the SU, BIG EAST, and NCAA record for most sacks in a single-season (17.5). In 2002, the Colts made him the 11th overall selection.
Syracuse begins the season on Sunday, September 5 at Purdue. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC. SU then plays at Buffalo on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. The Orange kick off the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 18 against Cincinnati. SU will also host Rutgers (Oct. 2), Florida State (Oct. 9), Connecticut (Oct. 30) and Pittsburgh (Nov. 6).
