SYRACUSE, NY – The Orange has been very successful on the football field during the past years, however what is just as important is the success off the field and in the classroom. With 33 days left until the Orange open the 2004 season at Purdue, we review some of the program's academic achievements.
Four SU student-athletes have been named National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athletes. Halfback Gerhard Schwedes was the first to receive the honor in 1959. He was followed by linebacker Tony Romano in 1983, two-time All-American defensive tackle Tim Green in 1985, and most-recently offensive tackle Mark Baniewicz in 1999.
In 2000, Syracuse received the Academic Achievement Award for having every member of the class who entered in 1994-95 earn his degree by 1999. In addition, Syracuse has been named to the honor roll in 10 of Coach Paul Pasqualoni’s 13 years for having a 70 percent graduation rate.
Last season senior linebacker Rich Scanlon was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America first team, while center Nick Romeo was named to the second team. Joining both Scanlon and Romeo as BIG EAST Academic All-Stars were seniors Lenny Cusumano, Dave DeAmato, Josh Thomas and returning players Steve Franklin, Matt Tarullo and Tim Washington. Also, Kyle Johnson was named the 2001 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
In addition, 47 football student-athletes were selected to the SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll this past academic year for achieving at least a 3.0 grade point average for the semester.
Syracuse begins the season on Sunday, September 5 at Purdue. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC. SU then plays at Buffalo on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. The Orange kicks off the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 18 against Cincinnati. SU will also host Rutgers (Oct. 2), Florida State (Oct. 9), Connecticut (Oct. 30) and Pittsburgh (Nov. 6)
