Senior tailback Walter Reyes (Struthers, Ohio), who is a candidate for the 2004 Heisman Trophy and the Maxwell Award (presented annually to the nation’s top player), will begin his quest to become the first SU player to ever have three consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons. His 38 career rushing touchdowns is SU’s all-time record. In 2003 Reyes tied for third in the nation 20 rushing scores.
Six offensive players and one who moved from defense make their debut on the offensive depth chart, including freshmen Joe Fields (Houston, Texas) and David Bouchard (Cap-de-la Madeleine, Quebec), redshirt freshmen Carroll Madison (Houston, Texas), Breyone Evans (Bristol, Conn.), sophomore Landel Bembo (Tallahassee, Fla.) and junior Kurt Falke (Industry, Texas) are listed on the depth chart for the first time in their careers. In addition, junior Steve Gregory (Staten Island, N.Y.) is listed as the starting wide receiver after starting at cornerback for the past two years.
On the defensive side six players are on the depth chart for the first time, and one additional defender makes his debut on the defensive two-deep. Redshirt freshman Tony Jenkins Springfield, VA) is listed as the starter at defensive tackle, while sophomore Chris Thorner (West Suffield, Conn.) is the back-up after moving from offensive guard in the preseason. In addition, redshirt freshmen Cornelius Campbell (Fort Washington, Md.), Lee Williams (Webster, N.Y.) and Jameel McClain (Philadelphia, Pa.) and true freshman Dowayne Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) are on the two-deep. Sophomore Marcus Clayton (Tallahssee, Fla.) is listed as the second cornerback after playing wide receiver as a true freshman in 2003. Long snapper Joe Neumann (Ganado, Texas) is also listed as a starter in his first year at SU.
