SYRACUSE, NY
– In 2003, many Orange standouts were able to break school records. Walter Reyes, Diamond Ferri, Brendan Carney and R.J. Anderson all made their way into the Syracuse record book. In 32 days, SU begins the 2004 season at Purdue where they can only hope to set more records.Walter Reyes had an outstanding 2003 season. He broke his own record of rushing touchdowns in a single-season when he scored 20 times. He also set single-season records for total touchdowns (21) and points (128). His 38 career rushing touchdowns are a SU record and his 39 total touchdowns puts him only seven behind Floyd Little’s career mark. Last season, he rushed for 1,347 yards, second only to Joe Morris’ 1,372. He is currently seventh all-time with 2,621 career-rushing yards.
Reyes also broke three Carrier Dome records. He rushed for 241 yards against Central Florida and he scored a record five touchdowns and 30 points against Notre Dame in the season-finale.
In his first season on the defensive side, Ferri set the SU single-season record for solo tackles by a defensive back with 75. His 120 tackles were the fourth most by a SU defensive back.
Freshman punter Brendan Carney made an immediate impact with the Orange. He tied the SU single-game record with 12 punts against Virginia Tech. It was also the second most in BIG EAST history. Carney established the SU freshman records for punts (60), punting yards (2,581), and punting average (43.0).
Senior quarterback R.J. Anderson set SU records for pass completions (186) and pass attempts (310) in a season. Anderson passed Marvin Graves marks set in 1993 as he moved up to fourth on SU’s all-time passing list.
Syracuse begins the season on Sunday, September 5 at Purdue. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC. SU then plays at Buffalo on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. The Orange kicks off the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 18 against Cincinnati. SU will also host Rutgers (Oct. 2), Florida State (Oct. 9), Connecticut (Oct. 30) and Pittsburgh (Nov. 6).
