SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Former Orange tight end and 2004 Syracuse University graduate Joe Donnelly signed a contract with the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL on July 31.
In 2003, Donnelly started six of eight games as tight end, in addition to being a member of the punt protection team, after returning from a shoulder injury that forced him to miss the first four games of the season. Donnelly caught five passes for 67 yards last year. He had 25 receptions for 272 yards and one touchdown throughout his career with the Orange.
Donnelly is one of eight SU student-athletes who graduated this past season and are currently in the NFL. Johnnie Morant (Oakland), Christian Ferrara (San Francisco) and Kevin Sampson (Kansas City) were all drafted this past season. Thump Belton (Detroit), Darryl Kennedy (Pittsburgh), Rich Scanlon (Kansas City) and Josh Thomas (Indianapolis) have all signed free-agent contracts.
