SYRACUSE, NY – Junior running back Damien Rhodes is the latest Syracuse-area product to wear an Orange jersey. When SU begins the 2004 football season in 30 days, Rhodes will continue to build upon the success of student-athletes who stay home to compete for the Orange.
Rhodes, a product of Fayetteville-Manlius High School, ran for 568 yards and seven touchdowns in 2002. He also compiled a team-high 1,268 all-purpose yards, the most ever by a freshman at Syracuse. Last season, Rhodes was slowed down by injuries.
Liverpool High delivered “A” talent to the Orange. Defensive tackle Tim Green attended Syracuse University from 1982 to 1985 after graduating from Liverpool. At Syracuse, Green was an All-American in 1984 and 1985. He was also honored as ECAC Player of the Year in 1985. Green ranks number one on SU’s all time career sacks list with 45.5 and is the top tackler among down lineman with 341 tackles. In 2001, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Liverpool High School delivered once again with Chris Gedney. Gedney was a member of the Orange from 1989 to 1992. He holds the SU records for most receptions by a TE in a season (34) and career (91). His 34 receptions and 5 touchdowns earned him unanimous All-American honors in 1992 as he helped lead Syracuse to the Fiesta Bowl.
Cornerback Will Allen came to Syracuse from Corcoran High School in 1996. When the New York Giants drafted him in the 2001 first round, Allen left SU with 42 passes defended, the second best total in Syracuse history. In 2000, he tied the SU’s single-season mark with 19 pass breakups and led the Orange with two interceptions.
Syracuse begins the season on Sunday, September 5 at Purdue. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC. SU then plays at Buffalo on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. The Orange kicks off the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 18 against Cincinnati (12:00 p.m.). SU will also host Rutgers (Oct. 2, 12:00 p.m.), Florida State (Oct. 9), Connecticut (Oct. 30) and Pittsburgh (Nov. 6).
