Countdown to Kickoff: Heisman Trophy Candidate Walter Reyes
8/7/2004 8:20:05 PM | Football
The 2003 campaign was an excellent year for Reyes, who broke many SU records and is close to eclipsing many more. The first record he broke was the Carrier Dome record for rushing yards. He rushed for 241 yards against Central Florida on September 20.
In the season finale against Notre Dame, Reyes broke numerous records. His five touchdowns and 30 points against the Fighting Irish were both Carrier Dome records. The five touchdowns added to his single-season records of 20 rushing touchdowns, 21 total touchdowns and 128 points. His 38 career rushing touchdowns is a new SU record and his 39 total touchdowns is just seven shy of Floyd Little’s career mark.
Reyes rushed for 1,347 yards, which is second only to Joe Morris’ 1,372 yards in 1979. He currently ranks seventh with 2,621 career-rushing yards.
The Orange won all four contests in which Reyes ran for 100 yards (at North Carolina, vs. Central Florida, vs. Toledo, vs. Notre Dame).
Reyes enters the 2004 season 1,628 yards behind Morris on the SU career rushing yards record list. He will try to join West Virginia running back Avon Cobourne as the only running backs in BIG EAST history to register three consecutive 1,000 yards seasons. He will also try to join Morris as the only SU backs to record three 1,000 seasons.
Syracuse begins the season on Sunday, September 5 at Purdue. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC. SU then plays at Buffalo on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. The Orange kicks off the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 18 against Cincinnati at 12:00 p.m. SU will also host Rutgers (Oct. 2, 12:00 p.m.), Florida State (Oct. 9), Connecticut (Oct. 30) and Pittsburgh (Nov. 6).
