Countdown to Kickoff: Previewing the BIG EAST Opponents

SYRACUSE, NY – The Syracuse Orange open the 2004 season in just four days with a non-conference showdown against the Purdue Boilermakers. SU will play against four other non-conference teams (Buffalo, Cincinnati, Virginia and Florida State). In the BIG EAST SU will host Rutgers, Connecticut and Pittsburgh and play on the road at West Virginia, Temple and Boston College.
Syracuse opens BIG EAST play with a home contest against Rutgers on October 2 at 12:00 p.m. SU owns a 26-7-1 advantage over the Scarlet Knights. SU head coach Paul Pasqualoni is 11-2 against Rutgers and SU has won all six contests at the Carrier Dome.
The Orange will battle West Virginia October 21 on ESPN for the Schwartzwalder Trophy. The Orange will look to stop the Mountaineers two-game win streak in the series. Syracuse is 30-21 all-time versus West Virginia, including Pasqualoni’s 8-5 mark against WVU.
Syracuse welcomes BIG EAST-newcomer Connecticut to the Carrier Dome for the first ever gridiron meeting between the schools on October 30. UConn head coach Randy Edsall played and coached at SU.
On November 6, Syracuse will host Pittsburgh in the final home game for the Orange seniors. Syracuse owns 29-27-3 record in the series. Pasqualoni owns an 11-2 mark against Pittsburgh, including 5-1 at the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse will then travel to Philadelphia to square off against the Temple Owls on November 13. Syracuse is 25-9-1 all-time against Temple. Pasqualoni is 12-1 against the Owls, including a 41-7 SU victory last season.
The Orange will play in Chestnut Hill, Mass. against Boston College in the 2004 regular-season finale on November 27. SU beat Boston College 39-14 last year in the Carrier Dome to improve its record against the Eagles to 27-17. Pasqualoni has an 8-5 mark against BC.
Syracuse begins the season on Sunday, September 5 at Purdue. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC. SU then plays at Buffalo on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. The Orange kicks off the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 18 against Cincinnati at 12:00 p.m.
