The Syracuse University Quad is the place to be for fans of all ages on Saturday, September 18 prior to the Orange football game against Cincinnati. At 10:00 a.m. the Excellus BlueCross BlueShield Football Fun Zone officially opens. The activities include inflatable games for kids, distribution of 1,300 SU Spirit Buttons, featuring the first prize-winning slogan, “Bear-y the Cats”, the SU Dance Team painting kids’ faces, and the SU radio network broadcast team of Matt Park, Dick MacPherson and Kevin Maher on the steps of Carnegie Library, located on the southeast corner of the Quad, for the first hour of the network broadcast (10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.). The Orange Friendzy, a joint effort between the SU Orange Pack and SU’s Alumni Association, will be in operation again, complete with Dinosaur Barbecue sandwiches, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Syracuse and Cincinnati will kick off the 2004 Carrier Dome opener at 12:00 p.m.
The Pride of the Orange SU Marching Band will perform a pre-game concert on the Quad beginning at 10:45 a.m. before it marches into the Dome for its pre-game festivities on the field. SU’s cheerleaders and dance team will also perform on the Quad prior to the game. This week the SU Marching Band’s pre-game performance in the Dome will feature a tribute to September 11 and the military service, including the playing of the Call to Colors by the SU Marching Band and the presentation of the Flag by the Fort Drum Color Guard will precede the game. The Fort Drum Pop Warner Team will be part of the on-field tunnel to welcome the 2004 SU Football squad on the field.
Prior to the game the 1959 Syracuse University National Championship football team will be recognized during an introduction of Football Lettermen’s Club members who will be on campus for the annual FLC reunion. The 2004 season marks the 45th anniversary of SU’s only football national championship.
In addition, the Football Lettermen's Club will present the fourth annual Mike and Judy Zunic Award to Joshua Frase, the son of former SU defensive standout Paul Frase, who was born with myotubular myopathy (MTM) in February, 1995. At the time of his birth, his muscles were so weak he could not muster the strength to contract his diaphragm to cry. He could flex only his right hand, and his
lungs could barely draw the air that he needed to breathe. Josh was diagnosed with MTM when he was three months old. The Joshua Frase Foundation was founded in 1995 by Paul Frase (SU class of 1988) and his wife, Alison. Two thousand children are born with neuromuscular diseases each year. Only 50 percent of these children born with MTM live until the age of two. Josh has defied the odds and is nearly nine years old now.
At halftime, the 2004 SU men’s lacrosse national champions will be honored at halftime of the SU-Cincinnati football game. The 2004 title is the ninth for Syracuse University men’s lacrosse and the third in the six-year tenure of head coach John Desko. Prior to the game, the lacrosse team will sign autographs in the Excellus BlueCross BlueShield Football Fun Zone on the SU Quad from 10:30 a.m. to kickoff.
Tickets for SU’s game against Cincinnati and the remaining four home games (Oct. 2 vs. Rutgers, Oct. 9 vs. Florida State, Oct. 30 vs. Connecticut, and Nov. 6 vs. Pittsburgh) are available at the Carrier Dome Box Office (1-888-DOMETIX) or via the internet, dometix.com.
The Excellus BlueCross BlueShield Football Fun Zone will open three hours prior to the SU games against Rutgers (Parents Weekend) and Florida State (Homecoming) and two hours prior to the Connecticut and Pittsburgh games.
