Orange Completes Day One at the Yale Invitational

New Haven, Conn. - The Syracuse women's tennis team completed its first day of competition at its first tournament of the fall season, the Yale Invitational. SU is in contention for the singles flight B title.
In the top flight, sophomore Ashley Lipton won her first match of the day, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0, against Anne Catherine Valle of Stony Brook, but lost her semifinal match to Reshml Srinath of Yale in 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Catherine Zawadzki made her collegiate debut by defeating Yale’s Christina Alford, 6-1, 7-6. Zawadzki lost to Stony Brook’s Hana Chovanova, 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinal
In Flight B, sophomore Katie Bramante defeated Victoria Vaslle of Stony Brook 7-6, 7-6 to begin the day. In the semifinal, Bramante was defeated by Rashmee Patil of Yale, 7-6, 6-0. Freshman Victoria Vaynberg had her first collegiate win against Liz Axier of Quinnipiac, 6-1, 6-2. Vaynberg would go on to defeat Sandy Wijeratne of Stony Brook 6-3, 7-6 to advance to the final on Sunday.
Junior Wei-Ming Leong began her third season at Syracuse with a quarterfinal win against Kat Ehle of Quinnipiac, 6-4, 6-1 in Flight C singles. Leong would be defeated in the next round by Aimee Kim of Yale, 6-3, 7-6. Sophomore Carolina Huignard won her opening match against Rachel Kimelman of Stony Brook, 6-1, 6-2, before being defeated by Olivia Nix of Yale, 6-4, 7-5.
Sophomore Kendyl Severino, in the Flight D singles bracket, received a bye in the first round and to Lindsey Dashiell of Yale, 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinal.
Doubles action will begin tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 19.
