Countdown to Kickoff: Non-Conference Opponents

SYRACUSE, NY – Syracuse opens the 2004 season in just three days in West Lafayette to square off against the #24/25 Purdue Boilermakers. That contest is just one of five non-conference games for the Orange this year. This years schedule includes teams from the Big Ten, ACC, MAC and Conference USA, and it also features three teams that are ranked in the preseason top 25 polls.
SU’s game at Purdue marks the first-ever meeting between the schools on the gridiron. Purdue finished the 2003 season 9-4 and ranked in the top 20.
On September 11, Syracuse play at Buffalo. The Orange has played Buffalo six times, winning the last contest in 2000, 63-7. The Bulls finished 2003 with a record of 1-11.
Cincinnati visits Syracuse on September 18 for SU’s 2004 Carrier Dome opener. Syracuse has a 3-1 record in the series against Cincinnati. SU won the first three meetings, including a 24-21 victory in the Carrier Dome in first game of the series in 1993.
The Orange then faces off against the Cavaliers in Virginia on September 25. The Cavaliers are ranked 16th/20th in the preseason polls. They finished 2003 with an 8-5 record. This will be the third time the two teams have met and the first time since 1977. The Orange won the previous two contests.
Syracuse will host Florida State on October 9 for SU’s Homecoming Weekend. The 2003 ACC champions finished 10-3 last season and is ranked 5/6 in the preseason poss. It will be the fifth time the two teams have played each other. The Seminoles won the last contest in 1991 and hold a 3-1 advantage overall against the Orange. SU beat FSU, 37-21, in the first-ever meeting in 1966.
Syracuse’s game at Purdue kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC. SU then plays at Buffalo on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. The Orange kicks off the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 18 against Cincinnati at 12:00 p.m. SU will also host Rutgers (Oct. 2 at 12:00 p.m.), Florida State (Oct. 9), Connecticut (Oct. 30) and Pittsburgh (Nov. 6).
