
Reyes is a Doak Walker Award Candidate

Reyes and the Orange kick off the 2004 season at Purdue on Sunday, September 5. The game will begin at 1:30 pm (EDT) and will be televised on ABC.
Reyes, a 2004 second-team preseason Sporting News All-American, is coming off one of the most productive seasons ever by a Syracuse runner. He ran for 1,347 yards, the second-best total in SU history, and a school-record 20 touchdowns in 2003. Reyes averaged 5.3 yards per carry on 253 rushes. He was a second-team All-BIG EAST pick and was a member of the Dopke.com All-America Junior Team. He set a Carrier Dome records with five rushing touchdowns against Notre Dame and 241 rushing yards versus Central Florida. Reyes was also the Orange’s second-leading receiver with 38 catches for 375 yards and a touchdown. His 1,732 all-purpose yards were the third-highest total in school history. As a sophomore, Reyes ran for 1,135 yards and 17 touchdowns.
With a full season to play, Reyes already holds the Syracuse career rushing touchdown mark with 38. He also ranks seventh all-time at SU with 2,621 career rushing yards. The senior is among the Orange’s all-time top 10 in several other categories, including carries (7th, 477), yards per carry (4th, 5.495), rushing yards per game (6th, 74.9), 100-yard rushing games (7th, 10), scoring (4th, 238) and total touchdowns (2nd, 39).
The SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select the semifinalists on November 15, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will vote on the winner in late November. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2004 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN along with other NCFAA member awards on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 9. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held at The Fairmont Hotel in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday, February 15, 2005.
The award, which is celebrating its 15th year, is named for SMU's three-time All-American running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification. Syracuse begins the season on Sunday, September 5 at Purdue. SU then plays at Buffalo on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. The Orange kicks off the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 18 against Cincinnati at 12:00 p.m. SU will also host Rutgers (Oct. 2 at 12:00 p.m.), Florida State (Oct. 9), Connecticut (Oct. 30) and Pittsburgh (Nov. 6).
