PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The red-hot Syracuse University field hockey team had two of its players earn weekly honors from The BIG EAST Conference after the Orange knocked off No. 17-ranked Penn State and No. 9-ranked Boston College last week. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career. Sophomore forward Ashley Fry (Douglassville, Pa./Oley Valley) earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time.
Wagner made eight stops in SU's 3-2 overtime win against Penn State. She followed that effort with an 11-save performance versus Boston College in a 2-1 double-overtime win. Six of her saves against the Eagles were made in overtime. Wagner is second among conference goalkeepers in goals against average for BIG EAST games only (0.86). She has 63 saves on the year and an .808 save percentage. Her season goals against average is 1.70.
Fry scored both goals in SU's win against Boston College. Her two-goal effort was a career-high after notching just two goals in her previous 26 outings. Fry is tied for the team lead in scoring with six points (three goals) and has helped the Orange win four games in a row.
The Orange is in first place in the BIG EAST Conference standings with a 2-0 league record. The team's overall record is 5-4. SU plays at Cornell on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. It takes to the road again on Saturday, Oct. 2, for a 1 p.m. contest at Massachusetts.
