Syracuse University head football coach Greg Robinson named Chris White SU's wide receiver coach and recruiting coordinator. A seven-year veteran of the SU staff, White has been the Orange's tight ends coach since 2000 and added recruiting coordinator to his responsibilities in February, 2004. White, who previously worked as a graduate assistant at SU from 1990-92, was SU's special teams coordinator from 2000 through 2003.
"Chris being a former quarterback, combined with his coaching experience, makes it obvious that his development in the passing game is advanced," Robinson said. "Chris' organizational skills, football knowledge and communication skills will be an asset to the whole staff as our recruiting coordinator."
An experienced collegiate coach, White spent five years as SU's tight ends coach and just completed his first year as the Orange recruiting coordinator -- an area he has proven his skills. Fifteen of the current SU student-athletes were recruited by White, while 10 of the 2004 NLI class committed to SU thanks to contact from White.
"The energy and enthusiasm everyone is talking about regarding Greg Robinson is genuine," White said. "The attitude he brings is something the kids are going to enjoy. They will gravitate to the atmosphere he is trying to create. I look forward to the challenge of coaching our wide receivers because we have a good, young group and they are going to develop into great players here. This opportunity broadens my coaching experience."
In 2004, under White's tutelage, junior tight end Joe Kowalewski caught 13 passes, the highest total for an Orange tight end since Stephen Brominski's 20 in 1999. During White's four years as SU's special teams coordinator, Marcus Clayton set the SU freshman record for punt return yards in 2003 and his 10.1 yards per return average was the eighth-best single-season total in SU history. Punt returner Jamel Riddle earned 2002 All-BIG EAST Second Team honors.
Prior to his appointment at SU, White was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. In addition, White served as special teams coordinator for the Mustangs.
White also gained experience as a special teams coordinator at Nevada-Las Vegas, where he served from 1997-1998. He was UNLV's linebackers coach during his tenure with the Rebels. He has also worked as an assistant coach at Holy Cross, where he served as the quarterbacks coach in the 1993 season, and at Arkansas State University, where he was the linebackers coach during the 1992 season. White was also the head football coach and a history teacher at Bishop Manogue High School in Reno, Nev. At Manogue, White was named Northern Nevada Coach of the Year after leading his team to the division championship.
A 1990 graduate of Colby College, White was a graduate assistant coach at Syracuse from 1990-92, working with quarterbacks and special teams. He earned his master's degree in education from SU in 1992.
White and his wife, Angel, have a daughter, Payton. White's brother, Brian, is the offensive coordinator on head coach Barry Alvarez's staff at Wisconsin.
