Syracuse University head football coach Greg Robinson named Scott Spencer Orange safeties and nickel backs coach. A graduate of the University of Texas and a former Longhorn defensive back, Spencer joins the SU staff after working as a graduate assistant at his alma mater last year.
“Scott is a special person who fits the profile I am looking for on the staff,” Robinson said. “I spent more hours with him than anyone else on the staff at Texas and all he did was produce in every way. He was a major player in the resurgence of our defense at the University of Texas. He is a special young man.”
Spencer worked with the UT football staff in two different roles. In 2004, Spencer assisted the defensive staff coaching in the secondary, and also helped with video breakdown and recruiting. During the 2001 and 2002 seasons he was a football video assistant. During his tenure with the Longhorns, UT won the 2005 Rose Bowl, the 2003 Cotton Bowl and the 2001 Holiday Bowl. He was a walk-on for the Longhorns from 1989-90.
“It was a true blessing to have been able to work with a man like him at Texas. Working side by side with him I saw what kind of man he is in the game of football and as a family man,” Spencer said. “He coaches with great passion and love for the game. He is in it for the kids, which I love. He wants to make everyone on the team better. I am so grateful to have this opportunity at Syracuse. I can feel the excitement of the community already.”
In 2003 Spencer was a coach and teacher at Roosevelt High School in San Antonio, helping guide the Rough Riders to a District 26-5A Championship.
Spencer began his coaching career at Saluda School/Polk County High School in North Carolina in 1999. In addition to coaching, Spencer taught physical education and science at Saluda for two years.
A native of Conroe, Texas, Spencer was a first-team all-district defensive back and captain at Conroe High School where he was three-year letterwinner. He earned a bachelor's of science in kinesiology from The University of Texas in 1998, and later earned a master's of education from UT in 2003.
Spencer assisted in the Mack Brown football camp in 2002 and 2004 and has been involved in tutoring and mentoring programs throughout his career.
Spencer and his wife, Kristin, have one daughter, Parker.
