Despite Nine First-Place Finishes, Swimming and Diving Falls to UConn

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Despite nine first-place finishes, the SU swimming and diving teams were defeated by Connecticut. The Husky men defeated the Orange, 151-85, while the UConn women were victorious, 146-97, at Ted Webster Pool on a snowy January afternoon.
The UConn women set a Ted Webster pool record in the 400 freestyle relay. Laura Kunces, Diane Duncheskie, Andrea Ryan and Jordan Zarin won the race in a time of 3:20.78, blowing past the old mark of 3:32.76 set by St. Bonaventure in 1997.
Once again, freshman Vanessa Dueñas (Miami, Fla./Lourdes Academy) had a strong performance for the Orange. She helped the SU women's 400 medley relay team to a first-place finish in a time of 3:54.51 and won the women's 200 butterfly in a time of 2:07.87.
Classmate Katie Maaske (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) was the second leg of the winning 400 medley relay and she also finished first in the women's 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.48.
Junior Melissa Clune (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge) and sophomore Randi Beaulieu (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park) were the other two members of the winning 400 medley relay team. Clune won the women's 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.57, while Beaulieu was second with a time of 24.68.
Junior captain Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's) beat out UConn's Emily Karel in a tightly-contested 200 freestyle. Wittich won the event in a time of 1:55.29, while Karel finished second with a time of 1:55.39.
First-place finishers for the Orange men's team were junior Pat Mugavin (Northport, N.Y./Northport) in the 1,000 freestyle (9:42.17), senior Josh Scott (Clayton, Calif./Clayton Valley) in the 200 freestyle (1:42.78), junior Rob Persico (Fulton, Md./DeMatha Catholic) in the 200 backstroke (1:54.37) and sophomore Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland) in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.14).
Persico had a fight on his hands in the 200 backstroke. He edged UConn's Bobby Folan, who finished second with a time of 1:54.60, and teammate Gus Kertzscher (Skurup, Sweden) who was third with a time of 1:54.74.
Syracuse will be home against next Saturday, Jan. 29, when it plays host to Seton Hall in a BIG EAST dual meet scheduled for 12 p.m. Diving will begin at 9 a.m. at Ted Webster Pool.
