SU head football coach Greg Robinson completed his staff with the hiring of Jim Salgado, who joins the Orange program to coach the cornerbacks and the secondary. A 1993 graduate of Hofstra University, Salgado has been a college coach in the Northeast since 1994.
“I am very excited about this great opportunity to work with Coach Robinson and this program,” Salgado said. “Growing up in the New York area, I always watched Syracuse football. It is a great program with a rich history and tradition. My approach is to be aggressive and get after things, but to have a lot of fun doing it. I know what the cornerbacks are going through and what they are seeing because I played the position at Hofstra. It is a tough position physically and mentally.”
An 11-year collegiate coaching veteran, Salgado was the assistant head coach and defensive backs coach for Northeastern in 2004. Salgado also coached the Huskies secondary from 2000-01. At Northeastern, Salgado mentored All-American T.J. Hill, as well as All-Atlantic 10 honorees Gavin Potter, Art Smith and Kurt Abrams. During his coaching tenure, Salgado has coached linebackers for three years and the defensive backfield for eight. Salgado served as a minority intern coach for three NFL teams (Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins).
“Jim did a nice job for us as an intern at training camp this past summer,” said Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid. “You could tell that he has a bright future in this business. He worked very hard and was very diligent in his duties. He'll job a great job on Coach Robinson's staff."
Prior to his appointment at Northeastern for the 2004 season, Salgado was the secondary coach at his alma mater for two years. During his tenure at Hofstra, the Pride led the Atlantic 10 in pass defense for two years, and finished ninth and 13th in the country in pass defense in 2002 and 2003, respectively
“Having spent a little time in the BIG EAST with Temple, I know what it takes to be successful,” said Northeastern head football coach Rocky Hager. “I think Jimmy has the tools to be an excellent coach. He gets along with the players, coaches and support staff extremely well. He is a consummate professional. I think his biggest assets as my assistant head coach were his organization and how well he got along with the players. You have a really great guy coming there and I think he will help Syracuse’s football team be very successful.”
Salgado was the secondary coach and special teams coordinator at Millersville University from 1997-99. In 1996 he was the linebackers coach at Boston University after serving as the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Western Connecticut State from 1994-95. Salgado began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant for defense at Hofstra University after getting his start in coaching as the quarterback and defensive back coach at Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, NY in 1993.
Salgado was one of 20 coaches selected to participate in the Advanced Coaching program at the NCAA Coaches Academy in Orlando in 2004. The program focused on assisting ethnic minority coaches with career enhancement, networking and exposure opportunities. He was also one of 12 college coaches chosen to take part in the Expert Coaches program in June, 2004 at NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis. Salgado is a member of the American Football Coaches Association and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
A three-year starter at cornerback for Hofstra University, Salgado was a member of the 1990 team that finished the regular season undefeated and won the Eastern Region championship. He earned his degree in psychology in 1993.
Salgado and his wife, Carolyn, have a son, Jalen.
